The Truth About ADD and Change
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach
ADDed Success is ADD Coach Dana Rayburn's monthly newsletter about
living
successfully with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Welcome to ADDed Success!
Everyone knows that people with ADHD thrive on change. We're impulsive, after
all. And when you're impulsive, change is a given.
In my opinion it isn't so simple.
I believe while adults with ADHD do adore some types of change, we find other
types of change disturbing.
Put simply, we adore changes that WE instigate. Yet people with ADHD don't as
easily accept change imposed by someone else.
When we decide to change jobs, change our plans or change most anything, we do
it easily without batting an eye.
But have someone else tell us to change our jobs or plans and we often resist, get
flustered and over react – at least until we get accustomed to the new idea.
Needless to say this contradictory behavior is confusing to us, the person with
ADD, as well as to those around us.
Even worse, our resistance can cause us to say no too quickly to good
opportunities.
We live in a world of change, so what to do, what to do?
I find the best way to handle small changes is with awareness and delay.
As an illustration, when someone announces a change in plans, first notice your
resistant feelings. Next, I suggest you delay responding to the other person for
a moment. This gives you a chance to get accustomed to the change.
When dealing with a larger change, such as a totally new schedule, approach it
with awareness and extra planning.
Imposed change doesn't have to be so challenging. With practice you can learn to
embrace all types of change.
The Last Word
Our daughter is enthused about gymnastics these days. She's progressing so
well her coach thinks she'll be ready to join the competitive team in June.
I'm very proud of her. She works extremely hard, and I'm amazed to see that
little body I adore flipping around in the air.
Yet deep inside I'm not so thrilled. You see I'm already nervous about the massive
schedule change we'll experience come June when she makes the gymnastics
team. Not to mention traveling on weekends to competitions.
I know what's going on. It's a major change being imposed upon me. And I know
that with flexibility and extra planning I can handle it.
Still, part of my ADD brain is screaming NO CHANGE, NO CHANGE, NO CHANGE!
Hush up brain. Who knows… maybe we'll get to go to the Olympics someday.
