Clearing Clutter - When Close Isn't Near Enough
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach
ADDed Success is ADD Coach Dana Rayburn's monthly newsletter about
living
successfully with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD).
Welcome to ADDed Success!
Do you tend to leave stuff near where it is supposed to go instead of where it
actually belongs?
If you do...
-- Your shoes end up on the floor by the bed instead of three steps away in the
closet.
-- The scissors end up on the counter instead of two feet away in the drawer
where they belong.
-- The paper towels you just bought land in the entry hall instead of in the pantry.
Can you see how the seemingly small action of not putting things totally away
causes clutter to explode out of control?
Yes, when things are almost, but not quite, in the right spot the mess piles up
very quickly. And it truly takes just a tiny extra slice of time to put something
totally away instead of close to where it belongs.
That's why I was thrilled to get an email from Louise, an ADDed Success reader,
suggesting this mantra:
"Take it to its final destination"
Louise thought it a perfect partner for last month's mantra "Quit thinking and start
acting". I agree 100%.
I find when I'm merely putting something near where it belongs I consciously
think, "I'll put it away later". Now, when I catch myself thinking "I'll put it away
later" I replace that thought with "Take it to it's final destination".
I challenge you to notice your "I'll put it away later" thoughts and instead act to
"Take it to its final destination".
As the clutter in your world decreases your life will become much more calm and
simple.
The Last Word
I love mantras. They constantly keep me focused and on track.
The first mantra I remember learning was way back in college before I knew
about ADHD. My boyfriend's dad would say "If you're gonna do something, do it
right".
I still use that mantra today to avoid my sometimes slap, dash and sloppy ADHD
approach to tasks.
Do you have a favorite mantra?
If so, would you be willing to share it with me?
Simply reply to this email, tell me what your favorite mantra is and how you use
it in your life.
If I get enough responses, I'll share them all in next month's
ADDed Success.
To Your ADDed Success,
Dana
