How To Finish A Large Project Despite ADD
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach

ADDed Success is ADD Coach Dana Rayburn's monthly newsletter about living
successfully with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD).

Welcome to ADDed Success!
In case you hadn't noticed, Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder have a hard time
finishing projects - especially large ones.

A project grabs our attention for a while before suddenly vanishing from our
radarscope, never to be finished.

Adults with ADHD are plagued with unfinished projects for a number of reasons:
boredom and distractions being the most obvious.

However, I've noticed with my ADD coaching clients (as well as myself) the role
overwhelm plays in abandoning projects; especially when a project is large.

Big projects are just that....so big! Where do you start? What do you do next?
Sometimes it seems easier to just forget about the whole thing and hope no one
notices.

ADHD doesn't have to be so hard.

Here's a simple technique to help you get a handle on those large projects so you
can cross them off your list.

Think of a large project as a path of stepping-stones leading to your goal. The
stepping-stones are the actions you'll follow to get the thing done.

When the steps are too big - giant steps - your project becomes overwhelming.
You simply don't know what to do next.

Instead break your project into tiny steps. Steps so tiny you can breeze through
them in small chunks of time.

Let's look at an example. Suppose you want to get organized.

Here's a giant step: Organize the house.

Ouch! Where do you start? How long will this take? Just the thought of organizing
the entire house is boggling.

Here's a medium sized step: Organize the bathroom.

Okay, this is better - more manageable but still too vague.

Yet when you break your organizing project into small steps, magically it becomes
easier to accomplish:

  • Clean out the bathroom drawer.

  • Clean out the medicine cabinet.

  • Clean out under the sink.

  • Clear off the counter.

Follow those small steps and soon your bathroom will be organized. Concoct a
similar plan for each room of your house and eventually you'll whip the whole
place into shape.

Next time you get overwhelmed by a project, break it down into small steps.
You're sure to be much more successful at accomplishing your goal

The Last Word

If you've been reading 'ADDed Success' for a while you may remember I'm writing
a book on how to get organized. While I thought I'd have it published a couple of
years ago, life got in the way and that just wasn't possible.

However, I have been working on it. In tiny, little steps - sometime of just 15
minutes a day.

Happily those little steps are adding up, and I'm thrilled to announce, my book,
'Organized for Life!' will be available soon. I'll send out an email to let you know
when it's done.

I'm thankful those small steps have kept me moving forward a little bit at a time
until, finally, I'm reaching my goal.

To Your ADDed Success,
Dana
