Just How Organized Do You Need To Be?
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach

ADDed Success is ADD Coach Dana Rayburn's monthly newsletter about living
successfully with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Welcome to ADDed Success!
Despite the tendency to surround themselves with clutter and chaos, adults with ADHD truly do need to be organized to live an ADD-Friendly life.

That's because clutter and chaos means visual clutter, and visual clutter increases mental clutter. Not good, because ADHD comes with an over-abundance of mental clutter!

I can vouch for the fact that when my desk is a mess I get frantic.

If you're like me, you have enough of a challenge staying on track and on time without searching for stuff or getting distracted by piles of clutter.

So I've created systems to keep my desk clutter-free. It makes a huge difference in my everyday life and happiness.

Okay Dana, you’re right, you say. But, how do I start doing something about it?

The first thing you can do is set realistic expectations. Aiming for perfection is a recipe for disappointment and disillusionment.

Realistic is plenty fine. You’re not in a contest for “Most Incredible Home” Magazine, after all.

So, just how organized do you need to be?

You just need to be organized well enough to quickly find the things you use the most when you need them.

Remember, this isn’t about some magical “standard.” It’s about you and your needs.

What’s organized well enough for you might be too organized for one person or not organized enough for another. That's why ’one size fits all‘ organizing solutions seldom work.

Can't do it alone? You don’t have to. There is help. You can work with a friend. You even can bring in a Professional Organizer. Look for one in your area at the National Association of Professional Organizers web site.

And of course, you could sign up to be one of the first to get my book, “Organized for Life”, when it’s published.

The Last Word

I'm freshly home from the ADDA (The Attention Deficit Disorder Association) Conference in Orlando. What a lively and energetic bunch we were!

This was my ninth ADDA conference.

I could tell you I attend year–after-year to learn from the geniuses of the industry; to present workshops and share my knowledge; or to connect with new clients and old friends.

But, here's the real reason I go to ADDA every year....

It refreshes my soul to be totally immersed in an ADHD-Friendly environment for four solid days.

ADDA is a place where I can walk too fast, laugh too loud, fidget and forget and just be generally ADD-wacky and nobody cares.

Tell me, what do you do to refresh your soul?

To Your ADDed Success,
Dana
