In it you'll discover my favorite tactic for turbo-charging your learning. I call it the Learning Style Two-Step. Need a refresher on the previous articles?
Let's get started! You'll find the Learning Style Two-Step pretty simple. Here's what you do.
Translating helps your brain absorb what you're trying to learn more easily. To translate you simply adapt the way the information is being presented so it matches your favorite learning style. For example, suppose your favorite learning style is Verbal (you need to speak to learn) and the information you are learning is presented in an Auditory (listening) format. Simply figure out some way to actually say what you are hearing. You might write the key points as you listen and read them aloud later on. Or, discuss what you heard with a friend. Step Two - Add Another Style. With learning styles the more the merrier. Using two or three learning styles to pay attention or retain helps the information really stick. Adding Another Style is exactly as it sounds. You merely present the information to your brain in a third learning style; a style other than your favorite style or the one in which the information is being presented. Let's continue with our above example. You're a Verbal person trying to learn something you're listening to (Auditory style). You've decided to Translate the Information by discussing what you've heard with a friend. How could you Add Another Style? Write out the key points (Kinesthetic); draw a diagram in colored-pencils as you listen (Visual); concoct questions about the topic (Cognitive). See how it works? The Learning Style Two-Step is easy, isn't it! Now you know how to use the Learning Style Two-Step to turbo-charge your learning. Why not put on your detective hat and do a little sleuthing? Figure out what Translating and Adding Another Style tactics best help you pay attention and remember.
