Will Buying More Storage Containers Help You Get Organized?
When you want to get organized dashing out to buy more storage containers might seem like a logical first step.
Trust me. It’s not.
Nope. You probably don’t need more storage. What you need is less clutter.
All the beautiful storage containers in the world won’t give you a revitalized, organized home if they’re brimming with gobs of stuff you no longer need, like or want.
So heed my wise words of experience. Before you spend another cent on storage containers, declutter first.
I’ve included a couple of useful articles on clearing clutter for you on this site such as:
Okay, so you’ve cleared the clutter and you’re ready to put the final touches on your organizing project by adding storage containers. Now can you dash to the store and buy more containers?
My answer is still no. At least not until you’ve prepared a bit first.
Follow these guidelines to make sure you only buy the storage containers you need as well as those that are right for the job.
- Look Around Your House Before You Buy.
Sure its fun to buy new stuff. But if you already have the perfect storage container on hand does it make sense to add to your clutter by purchasing one you don’t truly need? Perhaps a container you emptied while decluttering serves your purposes perfectly. Also, look through any decorative boxes or baskets you’re not otherwise using to see if they’ll do the trick. - Know Your Options.
You’ve got lots of choices when it comes to storage. Boxes, bins, drawers, shelves, underbed storage and carts to name a few. Some work better for some purposes than others so be sure to get one that meets your needs. Often you’ll find the widest variety online. - Buy the Right Size.
Measuring before you buy will save you lots of grief. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way. I have bought what appeared to be the perfect storage container only to discover it was way too large for the space. You’ll need to know two sizes: the size of the space the container will fit and the amount of stuff you want to store. - Make Sure the Container is Easy to Use.
If a container isn’t easy to open and close, you won’t use it. Some of the cheaper brands of storage bin come with lids that are too difficult to remove. Be sure to test all containers before you leave the store to make sure the lid easily comes off. The same applies to drawers. If they stick or won’t open easily you’ll pile instead of file. When it comes to buying storage you get what you pay for.
So there you have it. A few ideas to help you pick the perfect storage. You’ll discover even more ideas for how to store your stuff in my my Organized for Life! program. It’s your step-by-step guide to help you get organized so you stay organized.
