1-2-3 Magic, Effective Discipline for Children 2- 12
by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D.

If you're like me, you get frustrated by many of the parenting books on the market. They go into too much detail and the methods are too complicated for my brain to remember. That's why I was thrilled to discover Thomas Phelan's 1-2-3 Magic, Effective Discipline for Children 2-12. It's easy to follow and filled with practical examples to help you stop your child's annoying behaviors and encourage the behaviors you want.

1-2-3 Magic is a simple system for firm but loving discipline using counting and time-outs in a straightforward, unemotional manner. Though 1-2-3 Magic is appropriate for all types of children, Dr. Phelan’s experience as a clinical psychologist gives him a particularly keen insight into children with ADD.

Dr. Phelan's basic premise is that the parent shouldn't negotiate endlessly with young children to get them to behave. Instead of anger or frustration, poor behavior should be met with quiet, detached and consistent action.

This is a practical book; well-used in my family. I now know exactly what to do when my high-energy three-year-old acts up. I can put a stop to things quickly and calmly, bringing a more peaceful and much-desired sense of structure and cooperation into both our lives.
